Alex Cora Talks ‘Disappointing’ Start For Red Sox Infielder Due To Injury
Due to a lingering shoulder injury, Romy Gonzalez has experienced a disappointing start to training camp, as noted by Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora on Monday.
Cora also clarified for reporters that second base is the ideal position for Gonzalez when he is healthy. Unfortunately, Gonzalez is shut down from baseball activities until further notice, per Cora.
Gonzalez delivered a breakout 2025 season with the Red Sox, establishing himself as a reliable contributor in a utility role. In 96 games, primarily at first base, designated hitter, and other infield spots, he batted .305 with 47 runs scored, 96 hits, 23 doubles, three triples, nine home runs, 53 RBIs, and six stolen bases across 315 at-bats.
His on-base percentage reached .343 and slugging .483 for an .826 OPS, marking a significant jump from prior years and earning him a 2.0 WAR contribution. Statcast data showed strong contact quality, including a 93.3 mph average exit velocity, 57.3 percent hard-hit rate, and 12.6 percent barrel rate.
Overall in his MLB career through 2025, spanning time with the Chicago White Sox (2021-2023) and Red Sox (2024-present), Gonzalez has appeared in 271 games with 744 at-bats, hitting .269 with 20 home runs, 109 RBIs, 24 stolen bases, and a .729 OPS.
