Colin Cowherd Hammers Drake Maye With Unfair Matthew Stafford Comparison
Just a few days after losing an incredibly tight NFL MVP race to Matthew Stafford, Drake Maye had a chance to get the last laugh and prove the voters wrong.
After all, it was Maye, not Stafford, playing for a championship in the Super Bowl. Stafford and his Los Angeles Rams went down in the NFC Championship Game, losing a nailbiter to the Seattle Seahawks.
If Maye could beat the Seahawks on the game’s biggest stage, especially as an underdog, that would give him the ultimate trump card.
Instead, he folded like an old lawn chair against Seattle’s stifling defense, making Stafford’s MVP win look even better in hindsight.
Colin Cowherd, who believes Stafford deserved MVP, made an unflattering comparison between the two star quarterbacks on Monday’s episode of “The Herd.”
“I’m watching Stafford against this Seahawks defense and he looks like Lewis Hamilton. Drake Maye yesterday looked like a student driver. He was completely overwhelmed,” Cowherd said.
Stafford shredded the Seahawks this season, throwing for multiple touchdown passes in all three of his games against them. Including the playoffs, he threw for 961 yards and eight touchdowns with no picks against Seattle, including 374 yards and three touchdowns in the NFC Championship Game.
Meanwhile, Maye looked like a deer in the headlights against the Seahawks in the first three quarters of the Super Bowl. While he tacked on a pair of touchdown passes and 235 meaningless passing yards in the fourth quarter, he still got sacked six times and committed three turnovers.
In Maye’s defense, Stafford has much more experience in big games and knows Seattle better as a division rival. The three-time Pro Bowler just turned 38, has 17 years of NFL experience under his belt and has started 13 playoff games.
Meanwhile, Maye is still figuring things out. He’s only 23 and just finished his second NFL season. Stafford didn’t reach the Super Bowl until he was 34.
Maye’s career is just getting started. He still has a lot to learn, however, if he wants to win a championship like Stafford someday.
