Peter Schmeichel questions why Man United did not uncover £43m Tottenham gem
Man United legend Peter Schmeichel has challenged the Red Devils to do what Tottenham Hotspur managed to do in the transfer market two and a half years ago.
Tottenham’s transfer acquisitions have been a bit hit and miss since Johan Lange took charge a couple of years ago.
While some have not quite hit the expected heights, the Lilywhites have also pulled off some sensational deals, the most impressive of which was the signing of Micky van de Ven.
The North Londoners signed the Dutchman for just £43m, and the centre-back is now worth much more, having evolved into one of the best defenders in Europe.

The 24-year-old is now the envy of not just the Premier League but also all the big clubs in Europe, with his electric pace making him an extremely rare commodity among centre-backs.
Peter Schmeichel admits he is a huge fan of the Tottenham man has questioned why United cannot snare a gem like the Netherlands international.
He told Tipsbladet: “I think he [Van de Ven] has been a revelation. I think he is a fantastic player. He has a really, really good understanding of the game, and his speed is so valuable if you want to play offensive football.
“I sometimes think that a club like Manchester United or maybe even Liverpool should look for someone like him. Why didn’t they discover a player like him?”
Van de Ven is high on Liverpool’s wishlist but Spurs have other plans
Van de Ven has been linked with some of the biggest clubs in Europe over the past 12 months, and over recent weeks, it has emerged that Liverpool have identified the Spurs star as their top target for next summer.
Some outlets have suggested that the Netherlands international may even push to leave Tottenham in the summer as he wants to join an elite club.
However, Spurs remain hopeful of tying Van de Ven to a new contract and are also hopeful that their high valuation of the centre-back will scare off suitors in the summer.
