Tottenham failed to complete £5m January deal but they should return this summer - Opinion

0 10

So, the January transfer window is closed, and Tottenham ultimately failed to land Andy Robertson. But what should the Lilywhites do now?

We were all surprised when Spurs went in for Robertson in the first place, especially given the reports that emerged just a day after the club had signed young Brazilian left-back Souza.

Still, the deal made sense on paper. Getting an experienced Premier League star for around £5m would be a good move. Sadly, Liverpool pulled the plug on the Roberston switch, and Spurs could do nothing about it.

In the end, Tottenham fans were frustrated that the deal didn’t get done, and it was just another aspect of a really disappointing transfer window. There’s still a chance to get Robertson in the summer, though, and I firmly believe Spurs should grab that opportunity.

Tottenham should fight to sign Andy Robertson in the summer

Obviously, we know Robertson was happy to stay with Liverpool. But, come the summer, barring any drastic change of heart, he will be a free agent.

If signing Robertson for £5m was a shrewd move, getting him for absolutely nothing would be a no-brainer. Sure, he would want a fairly high salary, but for what he brings to the squad, it’s well worth it.

It’s thought Spurs are looking at Hugo Bueno as another left-back option, and it will probably be fairly easy to sign the Wolves man if and when they get relegated. However, while Bueno has time on his side, he doesn’t have the pedigree Robertson does.

While Souza needs patience before he is truly ready for Premier League football, he would benefit massively from having someone like Robertson to learn from. Indeed, the Scotsman would not only be a great player to have on the pitch, but he’d be a phenomenal figure in the dressing room, too.

Spurs need more leaders

The current Spurs leadership group includes captain Cristian Romero, the injured James Maddison, a disgruntled Micky van de Ven, and Guglielmo Vicario, who may be on his way out in the summer.

Clearly, that group needs tweaking, to say the least. Having Robertson, a proven leader and winner, would be a huge boost to the environment and the mentality of the Tottenham squad.

This is a player who has won major trophies time and time again and has captained Liverpool at their very best. You simply can’t put a value on that kind of experience.
