MLS move a real possibility for £13m Man Utd ace signed in 2022
Manchester United could yet sanction a late first-team exit as the winter transfer window enters its frantic final days.
With only three days remaining in the window, many clubs are expected to be busy finalising their squads for the business end of the 2025–26 campaign.
According to Dutch journalist Joost Blaauwhof, Tyrell Malacia is attracting interest from Serie A and Turkish clubs.
An MLS switch is also a concrete possibility, although no agreement has yet been struck.
Malacia’s current contract at Old Trafford expires in July, putting United in a race against time to avoid losing him for nothing.
While the club hold an option to extend his deal by a further 12 months, it is widely expected that United will decline to activate that clause.
The Netherlands international moved to Old Trafford from Feyenoord for a fee of around £13 million and became the first signing of the Erik ten Hag era.
His arrival was met with optimism and excitement, but Malacia never truly did enough to unseat Luke Shaw as the club’s first-choice left-back.
With the benefit of hindsight, he has struggled to even establish himself as a dependable second option at United.
Any hopes of steady progression were cruelly derailed by a devastating knee injury that sidelined him for a staggering 535 days.
During his long absence, managerial changes and new signings reshaped the squad, pushing Malacia further down the pecking order.
A six-month loan move to PSV Eindhoven last February was meant to reignite his career, but it failed to deliver the desired revival.
He was subsequently placed in the club’s infamous ‘bomb squad’ last summer, underlining how far his stock had fallen.
Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu are two solid first-team alternatives for the left-back spot.
United also have one eye on the future, with Harry Amass and Diego Leon viewed as emerging long-term alternatives.
As a result, it now feels like a case of when, not if, Malacia finally departs Old Trafford.
At just 26 years old, he still has time on his side to rebuild his career and rediscover the form that once made him such a promising signing.
