Inter Milan & Napoli want to purchase £80m Man Utd star in January - report
Inter Milan, Napoli and Fiorentina have expressed an interest in signing Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire during the ongoing transfer window, according to Italian journalist Marco Conterio.
The England international was a key player under former manager Ruben Amorim during the backend of last season, but he has had limited playing time this campaign after a hamstring injury in November.
Maguire recently returned to first-team action with the Red Devils, and Conterio claims that a number of top Serie A clubs, including Inter, Napoli and Fiorentina, are vying to secure his services this winter.
There are many more Italian teams keen on the former Leicester City man, who has opened the door for a winter transfer. The 32-year-old’s current contract with the Red Devils concludes on June 30.
Man Utd could be tempted to cash in on Maguire
The Red Devils have moved away from the 3-4-2-1 system with Amorim’s managerial exit. Michael Carrick has been placed on temporary charge, and he will operate with a 4-2-3-1 formation.
Maguire’s success under Amorim came in the middle of the back three. The change of system could mean that he could be out of contention for a starting role, given the competition for places.
Lisandro Martinez is an undisputed starter in the left centre-back role when fit. This leaves Maguire competing with Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven for the right centre-back position.
De Ligt has been out for some time with a back problem, but the Dutchman could return very soon. With this in mind, United could be tempted to cash in on Maguire during the winter period.
The £80 million signing is currently on a salary of £190,000 per week. Maguire’s early departure before the summer could help the club save around £4m in wages as well as secure a small transfer fee.
Napoli and Inter are vying for the Scudetto in a five-way race, while Fiorentina are in deep relegation trouble. Selling Maguire for £4-5m would represent a decent piece of business for the club.
