Canada star David chasing redemption at Juventus

0 26

Canada star Jonathan David scored a goal and provided one assist in Juventus’ 3-0 win over Sassuolo on Tuesday, and the Bianconeri hope the 25-year-old will end the season on a high.

David scored his second Serie A goal with Juventus on Tuesday, contributing to a 3-0 victory away at Sassuolo and ending a 135-day goalless streak in the Italian league.

The reaction from the Juventus squad was beyond meaningful as all the players, plus coach Luciano Spalletti, ran towards the Canadian to hug him.

David had been criticised in previous days for missing a penalty kick, which he wasn’t supposed to take, in a home 1-1 draw against Lecce, but the team’s celebration proved the players’ support towards the ex-Lille star.

“Everyone had taken a firm stance, because it’s different when you are inside a situation, so when you receive all those insults and comments, I would’ve been surprised if the team hadn’t acted as a shield to protect him,” Juventus coach Spalletti told DAZN Italia after the Sassuolo game.

“He sensed that during the last few days, and put in a great performance tonight. Seeing as he scored a goal too, that just confirmed how many friends he has in the locker room.”

David has now netted four times in 25 appearances across all competitions with Juventus and is competing for a starting spot with Lois Openda, given that Dusan Vlahovic will remain out of action for several weeks.

Juventus are in the race for a Champions League spot and have won nine games from 14 under new coach Luciano Spalletti. The Bianconeri have bounced back after a poor start under Igor Tudor.

Clearly, David will have to play a pivotal role if the Bianconeri are to reach their targets this season, but the fans and the club hope his latest goal will pave the way to a strong second part of the season.

“I know Jonathan well, and I wasn’t worried after he missed the penalty against Lecce. It happens to everyone,” argued Canada coach Jesse Marsch in a recent interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Now Jonathan won’t stop anymore, and he will score many goals. He just needed a period to settle in. I said before, and I repeat it. I am David’s national team coach with Canada, but at Salzburg, I coached Haaland and Milan’s Nkunku at Leipzig.

“After Erling, who is a monster, David is the best striker I’ve worked with.”
