Six positions where Tottenham need new signings ranked in order of priority - Opinion

0 11

Tottenham Hotspur are yet to complete a signing in the January transfer window, but there are a number of needs in the squad which must be addressed.

We are now six days into January, and Tottenham Hotspur have not yet made any movement in the transfer market other than to finalise the departure of Kota Takai and Brennan Johnson.

However, the Tottenham first-team squad is failing to deliver, and while Thomas Frank is partly to blame, some of the players are simply not at the required level.

There are multiple positions where Spurs could be stronger with a new signing, and we have ranked them in order of how they should be prioritised.

6. Spurs need a Pedro Porro alternative

Pedro Porro on his day is one of the best full-backs in the Premier League, but remaining consistent has never been his strength.

The Spain international seems to put in underwhelming performances as often as he is good, and his defensive positioning sometimes borders on insanity.

Tottenham need to bring in a second right-back who will not only fill in when Porro is injured or too tired to play, but also challenge him for a spot in the first team.

Once upon a time, Spurs had Kyle Walker starting games, but the very able Kieran Trippier was there to take over if his form dropped. This is the kind of squad depth Frank does not have at his disposal.

5. Tottenham could upgrade on Guglielmo Vicario

Every Spurs fan by now will have had their say on Guglielmo Vicario and whether or not he is good enough to be the first-choice goalkeeper at the club.

Ultimately, the 29-year-old has some good qualities, such as his ability to make close-range saves. However, there are too many blatant weaknesses in Vicario’s game which opposing teams choose to target.

The Italian continues to be poor at set pieces, and he has made some poor errors, which have led to goals this season. Tottenham are unlikely to identify his replacement now, but there needs to be a change between the sticks in the summer.

4. Spurs have lost their right-wing depth

With Johnson moving to Crystal Palace, Spurs are short on available right-wingers. The long-awaited return of Dejan Kulusevski will help, but he might actually be played down the middle if Xavi Simons fails to improve.

The only other option to have been playing on the right this season is Mohammed Kudus, and he has been hit and miss.

Although this side of the attack is not Tottenham’s greatest need, the club should be looking to find a goalscoring winger who has a stronger all-round game than Johnson.

3. Tottenham will need another striker soon enough

There is not exactly a shortage of strikers at Spurs in the centre forward position, but this could change in the summer.

Randal Kolo Muani will likely return to PSG, and Richarlison could be sold rather than being offered a new contract. Then there is Mathys Tel, who has not played much this season and could be sent out on loan.

Dominic Solanke has been out with an injury for some time, but he was not starting under Frank even when he was fit. Therefore, Tottenham should really be looking at bringing in a new striker after the 2025/26 campaign has concluded.

2. Spurs are still lacking a good all-round midfielder

It sounds ungrateful to suggest Tottenham need a new midfielder, but every one of the club’s players in the middle of the park has noticeable shortcomings.

Rodrigo Bentancur is an expert at passing the ball backwards, Joao Palhinha is not known for his quality on the ball, and the younger midfielders in the team are not yet finished products.

Spurs need a box-to-box midfielder who has the ability to defend, control the game and get the side moving forwards. At the moment, the players at Tottenham tend to be able to fulfil one of these functions, but they are limited in other areas.

1. Tottenham still need a new left winger

Big shock – Spurs need a left winger! Everybody has known since the departure of Heung-min Son last summer, but no signing has been made in this position as of yet. Tottenham were targeting Antoine Semenyo, but securing his signature was always going to be a long shot.

This is an area of the team which needs filling as quickly as possible, and Spurs simply cannot end January without bringing in a new left-sided attacker.

Even when Son was past his best, he was still a big goal contributor for Tottenham. Wilson Odobert may be a promising young player, but in comparison, he is a big downgrade on the former club captain.

This is a gap which needs to be filled this month, and Spurs should invest as much money as is necessary to get a deal done.
