Weekend preview: New year begins with derby treble

Royal Wootton Bassett Town are set to kick off 2026 in exciting fashion with a trio of derby encounters. On Sunday Bassett return to South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North action at home against Cirencester Town (Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 2pm kick off). James Lally's team enter the new year in second place and still unbeaten - but will be facing a Centurions side who, possessing the division's second best attacking record, will be determined to improve on their current position of fifth. Last season saw a pair of close games between the sides, with a 2-2 draw at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground and 4-2 victory for Bassett at the Corinium Stadium. Admission on Sunday is £4 for adults, £2 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members. Prior to that Saturday sees Bassett's Men's First Team travel to Wiltshire rivals Corsham Town in the Hellenic League Premier Division (3pm kick off), with Jonny Aitkenhead's side setting their sights on an unlikely double over the promotion chasing Quarrymen after having recorded a 2-1 home win back in August. Also on Saturday the Development team make the short trip to Purton Kingsdown in the Wiltshire League Premier Division (2pm kick off), with Mark Simpkins' team also capable of achieving a season double over local rivals following a 3-0 home victory in November.
