CLASS OF 2025-26 | MEET ROCHELLE MAYNE
Rochelle Mayne arrived at Princes Park during the off-season, after leaving London Seaward. The versatile defender/midfielder is thriving in her new surroundings, and has played in a variety of positions.
Management duo Connor Dymond and Martin McCarthy believe that she will continue to evolve. They believe that she’s a key member of their Dartford FC Women squad, and will help the team to achieve its goals this season.
To date, Rochelle has made eleven appearances. However, only three of those have been in the starting eleven. She has contributed with a goal though, as the ladies currently occupy fourth place in the London & South-East Regional Women’s Football League table. With 21 points from eight fixtures, the Darts are seven points behind league leaders Brentford, but have four games in hand.
With league success of paramount importance to the team, they do continue to break the records in cup competitions, particularly the Adobe Women’s FA Cup. And this Sunday sees them take on the London Bees in the Third Round.
Why did Rochelle decide to sign for the club, and what does she hope to achieve?
“I signed for Dartford because, I wanted to be at a club that would challenge me. I wanted to be at a club where I can progress at. I believe in this team 100%. I know that we’re capable of competing in the fourth tier!”
She continues, “It’s my intention to work hard and rebuild my confidence because, I’d like to become a professional footballer in the future. Football is my happy place, and I love playing in the centre of the midfield.”
As she mentioned her belief in the team to be successful, what does Rochelle bring to the table?
“I believe my composure and skills on the ball set me apart from other players. My biggest contribution is creating chances and helping the team to move forward. My teamwork and attitude are strengths of mine, however, I can sometimes be a little too hard on myself when I make mistakes. I’m working on staying calm and moving on quickly, so that I can focus on the next stage of play. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from football it’s, sometimes it’s better to go back a few steps in order to jump a few in the future.”
With a career in football having its highs and lows, how does Rochelle remain focused and motivated throughout the long seasons?
“I’m always reminding myself as to why I’m here in the first place. I mustn’t forget the end goal. Most importantly, I try to keep my mental state healthy despite the challenges that football presents.”
One such challenge, albeit a good one from the Dartford FC Women’s team is concerned, is the competition for places. And Rochelle is fully aware of this…
“Dealing with the competition for places has been a challenge for me. I must admit that, at first, it was frustrating not being in the starting lineup. However, it has pushed me to work harder during training and focus on improving the parts of my game that need work.”
Does she do any additional fitness work to help situation?
“Yes, I try to go to the gym 5-6 times a week, where I focus on something different each day. Obviously, I work outside of the game too, so tiredness throughout the week can be difficult. However, I enjoy both my work and my football, so it’s not so bad getting it done!”
She continues, “I was once told to enjoy the process and keep showing up. I always prepare for matchdays from the night before, with good nutrition and trying to calm my nerves. I do get nervous before every game to be honest. On the actual day, I listen to my favourite songs and try to be in the best mood that I can be.”
A big squad can be vital in helping a team become successful, especially when injuries occur. And it’s clear that Rochelle is mindful of that factor, and is keeping herself ready for when she’s called into action.
Taking into account all of her experiences, does she have any advice for the younger generation?
“Always work hard. Take set-backs as lessons, and don’t rush the process!”
That’s sound advice from someone who knows what she’s talking about.
