Red Sox Linked To Mariners All-Star In New Offseason Buzz
The Boston Red Sox continue to show up in MLB headlines during hot stove season, this time in connection with a Seattle Mariners infielder who hit .265 with 26 homers, 78 RBI and 64 runs scored in 138 games in 2025.
The Boston Globe‘s Alex Speier suggested on Saturday that the Red Sox could pursue Jorge Polanco.
“The Sox want to add a top position player this offseason, whether through a reunion with third baseman Alex Bregman or another bat such as first baseman Pete Alonso,” Speier wrote (subscription required). “But even assuming they do so, multiple sources suggest they’re open to adding an additional complementary position player.”
“One intriguing possibility: Switch-hitting infielder Jorge Polanco, who slashed his strikeout rate from 30 percent in 2024 to 16 percent in 2025 en route to a .265/.326/.495 line with 26 homers. The 32-year-old played second base and third for the Mariners, and is open to adding first to add to his versatility.”
Polanco, 32, was an All-Star in 2019 as a member of the Minnesota Twins. Polanco has played the previous two seasons of his 12-year MLB career with the Mariners, but he declined his player option on November 5, becoming a free agent.
Polanco burst onto the MLB scene with the Twins in 2014, debuting as a slick shortstop prospect. After an 80-game PED suspension in 2015, he rebounded fiercely, becoming a switch-hitting cornerstone by 2019 with a .295 average and 22 homers. A five-year, $25.75 million extension followed, cementing his role through 2023 amid injuries and positional shifts to second base.
Traded to the Mariners in January 2024, Polanco adapted to DH duties. His 2025 campaign marked a revival, helping to propel Seattle to the ALCS (he hit a clutch walk-off homer in Game 5 of the ALDS against the Detroit Tigers).
