Patriots Push? Drake Maye Jokes About Improving His QB Sneak

It has been four years since the Philadelphia Eagles perfected the most unstoppable play in football, the “tush push.”

The play has become a hotly disputed topic among NFL teams and fans as it remains virtually unstoppable in short-yardage scenarios.

The New England Patriots have struggled mightily in such scenarios.

New England was held out of the end zone on two red zone trips last Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. One of those trips included six plays inside of the one-yard line.

The Patriots are 20th in the league with just over half of their red zone drives ending in touchdowns. It gets worse when the Patriots are inside the opponents’ ten-yard line, where they score on just 65.4%, the 25th worst percentage in the league.

Reporters asked quarterback Drake Maye if he has considered developing his quarterback sneak ability at the goal line.

“I got to find a way to get in,” Maye said. “I think that is the biggest thing. I wouldn’t say it is an art. I think there’s a mentality. I got to flip a switch. Or, I don’t know, do some smelling salts in there.”

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs was also asked about the red zone shortcomings.

“I feel like we just have to execute better,” Diggs said. “We had some plays in the game, we didn’t execute them at a high level, so it’s a matter of everyone doing their job, and finishing.

“As receivers, we have to get those blocks on the safeties, and throw our hat in there, an extra arm in there, do whatever we can to get in the end zone.”
