Giants Star Offers Odd Criticism Of Drake Maye

The New England Patriots are preparing for a Week 13 matchup with the New York Giants before they can finally enjoy their bye week in Week 14. Ahead of this game, Drake Maye received a rather odd backhanded compliment from star pass rusher Brian Burns.

In his first full season as the Patriots’ starting quarterback, Maye has been excellent, throwing for 3,130 yards and 21 touchdowns through 12 games. In the process, he’s turned himself into a surefire MVP candidate this year.

There are still areas in which Maye can grow, with one of them being his pass-rush recognition. When discussing Maye, Burns said that he believes the talented second-year passer is “too poised” under center, which leads to him forgetting about the guys who are coming after him sometimes.

“I’m not really too sure yet about how quick he is to process everything,” Burns said of Maye. “He does seem to be poised, maybe a little bit too poised … At times, he’s so caught up in making the right play or getting so caught up in his routes downfield, he just forgets about somewhat of who’s rushing him.”

Burns’ comments are a bit head-scratching, but they do make some sense. Maye has already been sacked 37 times this season, and a decent chunk of those sacks have been due to him holding onto the football too long. That’s something he can’t afford to do against Burns, who already has a career-high 13 sacks this year.

Considering the run Maye and the Pats have been on, taking veiled shots like this may not be the best idea. New England and New York will settle things on the field when they square off on Monday Night Football.
