4 Wins, 5 Games: Amorim already knows his ideal wing-back pair, he must stop experimenting
Manchester United suffered a heartbreaking loss to Everton, bringing an end to their five-match unbeaten run.
Manager Ruben Amorim made several debatable calls, but none were more baffling than deploying Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu as his wing-backs.
Mazraoui and Dorgu looked completely out of ideas whenever they reached the business end of the pitch.
They attempted five crosses, yet not a single one found its mark.
Even worse, the pair contested ten duels and ended up losing eight of them.
Starting with five defenders at home against Everton was a disastrous tactical gamble that predictably blew up in United’s face.
We believe Amorim must stop experimenting with his wing-backs as he already knows the pairing that actually works.
Amad Diallo and Diogo Dalot have started as the right and left wing-backs respectively in five matches.
Their return of four wins and one draw is clear proof of the stability and threat they bring to the side.
Let us be clear, Dalot has not done anything special.
In fact, being right-footed makes his attacking contribution from the left flank naturally restricted.
He constantly has to cut inside before attempting a cross and even that is a rarity.
However, with Amad Diallo operating almost as an out-and-out winger on the opposite flank, Dalot’s more conservative positioning gives United crucial balance.
Diallo has been nothing short of transformative in the right wing-back role.
His growing understanding with Bryan Mbeumo is starting to unsettle and stretch opposition defences.
He looked lively in attack against Everton, creating four chances and taking five shots.
Diallo should be one of the first names on the team sheet, and undeniably in the right wing-back slot.
Without him, United’s creativity and attacking spark evaporate.
