NFL Insider Reveals Why Drake Maye’s Development May Force Dolphins To Rebuild

The New England Patriots appear to have found their quarterback of the future in Drake Maye, as he has led the team to a 7-2 start through nine games. Maye’s sudden star turn has generated a lot of buzz across the NFL, and one team that has taken note of his success is the Miami Dolphins.

Halfway through the 2025 campaign, the Patriots have completely flipped the AFC East division on its head. New England is currently leading the way, with the high-powered Buffalo Bills being right on its tail. The Dolphins are in third place, while the lowly one-win New York Jets are bringing up the rear.

This isn’t exactly how many folks figured the division would look after nine weeks, but it’s put Miami in quite a bind. The Pats and Bills appear set to be playoff contenders for years to come, while the Jets have a treasure chest of draft capital that should help them get back on track.

The Dolphins are stuck somewhere in the middle, as they have a lot of talent, but it’s not leading to wins currently. With Maye turning himself into a star, NFL insider Adam Schefter believes that increases the likelihood Miami’s new-look front office will blow up its roster over the offseason.

“Josh Allen is in Buffalo, Drake Maye is in New England. The New York Jets are going to be getting a high-profile quarterback in the next two years,” Schefter said on “The Adam Schefter Podcast.”

“(The Dolphins), right now, are in the most challenging position of all those teams, which could lead, in the offseason, to the Dolphins being more aggressive and more willing to listen to trades revolving around their players.”

For a point in time, it seemed like the Dolphins could be a real threat to the Bills in the AFC East. The Patriots appear to have taken that spot away from them, though, and with another talented quarterback in the division, Miami may be realizing that its best path forward is to embark on a rebuild.

No sports team ever wants to rebuild, but when considering the circumstances, it seems like the Dolphins’ most prudent path forward. Maye will look to continue to establish himself as one of the top passers in the league in Week 10 when he takes on a tough Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense.
