Two Red Sox Players Win 2025 AL Gold Glove Awards
The day after crowning a World Series champion, MLB recognized two Boston Red Sox position players for their fielding prowess.
MLB revealed the 2025 Gold Glove Award winners on Sunday night. Boston’s outfield was well represented, with center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela and right fielder Wilyer Abreu earning recognition in the American League.
Rafaela unsurprisingly won his first Gold Glove after a stellar season. His 20 defensive runs saved (DRS) in center field led the position and only trailed Steven Kwan, the AL’s Gold Glove winner in left field, among all MLB players.
The 25-year-old led all outfielders with 22 outs above average (OAA) and tallied eight assists with just five errors at his primary position. That’s despite Rafaela starting 19 games at second base down the stretch.
Meanwhile, Abreu earned his second straight Gold Glove nod despite injuries and a platoon limiting him to 95 starts in right field. He still generated 15 DRS and eight OAA with seven assists.
MLB.com’s Manny Randhawa noted that Rafaela and Abreu marked the fifth time a Red Sox outfielding duo won Gold Gloves in the same year. Mookie Betts and Jackie Bradley Jr. most recently gave Boston two winners in 2018, and Dwight Evans and Fred Lynn are the only pairing to achieve the feat twice (1978 and 1979).
Not every Red Sox finalist won a Gold Glove on Sunday. Carlos Narváez lost out on the AL’s catching prize to the Detroit Tigers’ Dillon Dingler.
As Gold Glove winners, Rafaela and Abreu are both in the running for the Platinum Glove Award presented to each league’s best fielder. The winners will be announced on Friday.
