Guilderland boys soccer stuns Shaker in penalty kicks, advancing to Class AAA championship game
NISKAYUNA, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- 110 minutes was not enough time to decide a winner between Shaker and Guilderland in Monday's Class AAA sectional semifinal game at Niskayuna High School.
The top-seeded Blue Bison - winners of three straight section titles - and fourth-seeded Dutchmen played to a 0-0 tie in regulation. After two scoreless, 15-minute overtime periods, the match went to penalty kicks.
Guilderland prevailed in the PKs, 4-3, with senior Oscar Colbert delivering the game-winning goal.
Not only are the Dutchmen headed to the AAA title game for the second year in a row, they managed to bounce the team they lost to in the final last season from the playoffs, ending Shaker's sectional title streak.
The goalie play was the story of the match ahead of the penalty kicks. Guilderland's Colin Chapman and Shaker's Gannon King were both superb, making a number of clutch saves in both regulation and overtime.
Shaker had its chances, and on two separate occasions had goals overturned. Anthony Teliji appeared to score the go-ahead goal in the 69th minute, but it was called back because of a foul committed by Shaker in the box. Then, with under 60 seconds to play in the second overtime period, Teliji had the potential game-winning goal nulled by an offside call.
Entering penalty kick round four of five, the score was even at 2-2. A missed attempt from Shaker's Eyad Sayed opened the door for Guilderland. Carem Moncur capitalized, putting the Dutchmen ahead, 3-2.
Tyden Levy kept the Blue Bison alive, drilling his team's fifth and final attempt.
The last penalty kick opportunity came down to Colbert, and he tucked his shot just inside the left post, sending Guilderland to the championship game.
Guilderland will meet third-seeded Shenendehowa for the title. Shen shut out two-seeded Saratoga Springs in the earlier semifinal game, 3-0.
The Class AAA championship game will be played Thursday at Bethlehem Central High School. Opening kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
