Red Sox Reportedly Sign Veteran After Carlos Narvaez, Connor Wong Surgeries
The Boston Red Sox reportedly have signed a veteran catcher as their first move of the offseason.
After the New York Yankees eliminated the Red Sox in the Wild Card round, the team announced that catchers Carlos Narvaez and Connor Wong underwent surgeries.
With a need at the position, Aram Leighton of Just Baseball reported on Sunday that the Red Sox have signed veteran catcher Jason Delay. It’s a minor league deal with an invite to spring training.
Delay has spent the last three seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He appeared in seven games last season, hitting .200 with six RBIs.
The 30-year-old appeared in 134 career MLB games and is hitting .231 with two home runs and 31 RBIs. Delay is considered a good framer and defensive catcher, and adds depth to the position.
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow revealed Narvaez underwent surgery after the season, as he dealt with a knee injury throughout the season. Breslow expects Narvaez to be ready for spring training.
“He deserves a ton of credit for his willingness to play through this, potentially even at a time when others would have maybe bowed out, because he felt that attached to trying to help the group,” Breslow said at the time. “But this should be a pretty straightforward procedure, and (we) don’t anticipate any issues.”
Wong, meanwhile, underwent surgery for a right-hand carpal boss excision. Like Narvaez, Wong is expected to be ready for spring training.
