Eberechi Eze admits he was ready to join Tottenham in strange public statement
Eberechi Eze has shed light on what he was thinking about joining Tottenham Hotspur before Arsenal entered the race for his signature.
Arsenal hijacked Tottenham’s move for Eze during the summer window after it initially seemed like the attacking midfielder’s move to N17 was agreed.
It was reported that as soon as the Gunners entered the race, Eze had his heart set on a move to the Emirates, with Tottenham seeing the deal fall through after working on it for several weeks.
For the first time since his transfer, the 27-year-old has now spoken about his decision to join Arsenal and about Spurs’ approach.
Eberechi Eze admits he would have joined Tottenham
While the former Crystal Palace man may not be starting every game for Mikel Arteta’s side this season, he has made an impact since his move, having scored once and provided three assists so far.
The England international, who came through Arsenal’s youth academy, has now admitted that he was ready to join Spurs, but his decision was made once the Gunners made their approach.
Eze said (via The Athletic): “I was prepared to go to Tottenham, but from the moment Arsenal came, it was always going to be them.”
He added: “Playing for Arsenal (matches) are more like a show or a theatre. There’s more pressure, playing for titles and in the Champions League, but it’s something I’ve dreamed of since being a kid. It’s not 100 per cent there at the minute, but I’m enjoying getting better.”
Johan Lange claims missing out on Eze was a blessing in disguise for Spurs
After missing out on the former Eagles star, Spurs struck a deal with RB Leipzig for Xavi Simons, who has not hit the ground running at Tottenham.
However, Johan Lange previously hinted that missing out on Eze and Morgan Gibbs-White worked in Spurs’ favour.
Tottenham’s new sporting director suggested that Xavi was the perfect fit for what Spurs were looking for, given the Dutchman’s age and his potential.
