Aston Villa player ratings scrape the bottom of the barrel with 2 and 3 out of 10 performances against Go Ahead Eagles

0 11

Aston Villa suffered a humiliating defeat against Go Ahead Eagles in the Europa League and furious fans have had their say.

Villa supporters submitted their player ratings via our AVF ratings form, which we’ll be inviting you to do via our social media throughout the 2025/26 season.

The process is simple. We’ll share a link at full time to ask fans to give every Villa player a score out of 10 – without a zero because we’re grown-ups and so are you – before adding in my own ratings from Aston Villa Review and taking an average.

These average scores will be used for Power Rankings each month and, ultimately, to crown a Player of the Season.

Go Ahead Eagles v Villa player ratings

Emiliano Martínez – 4.1

There aren’t many of these average ratings that I consider harsh but I gave the goalkeeper 6 out of 10. I thought he was comfortable enough with everything he had to do with the exception of the second goal conceded. Did he make that a bit too easy? Sure. No issues with his feet as far as I could tell.

Victor Lindelöf – 3.3

This was a thankless task for Lindelöf, who isn’t much of a right-back and certainly isn’t a right-back in a team that has all of the ball but lacks incisiveness.

Tyrone Mings – 4.0

I dropped Mings down to a 4 largely because Villa conceded twice against poor opposition and the offside line, of which Big Ty forms a vital and vocal part, was sprung on both occasions. In truth, Villa defenders aren’t coming out of two goals against with any credit here.

Pau Torres – 3.9

This was a stinker from Torres, who looked to have reverted to the type of game for which I criticise him most – ponderous passing when Villa needed an injection of something, rushed passing when patience was required.

Ian Maatsen – 3.9

Maatsen was dire defensively and only briefly any better than that going forward. I liked what I saw of him working on the left with Jadon Sancho and Amadou Onana for about 15 minutes of the first half but that was about it from him. A bad night for a player with competition in a match that was set up for his strengths.

Amadou Onana – 4.1

The game bypassed to midfield to an extent but Onana has to be able to impose himself on opponents of this calibre and he certainly didn’t do that. I went for a 5 because I think he managed an average display in a sea of poor ones.

Lamare Bogarde – 4.7

There might be a little generosity at play here because Bogarde is young and was playing with a new partner who didn’t have a great game, but I don’t think he was better than Onana. He did show his ability to carry the ball aggressively, which was good to see again.

Evann Guessand – 2.7

Guessand got a proper kicking in our fan ratings after scoring his first Villa goal by accident. I can’t say I thought he performed significantly worse than the bulk of the Villa team, nor deserved to dip below a 3 out of 10, but he definitely wasn’t good.

Jadon Sancho – 5.4

Voted the best of Villa’s starters against Go Ahead Eagles and I don’t disagree. It was a positive return, full of purposeful running with the ball, but we need to start seeing some productivity at the end of it.

Emi Buendía – 4.3

Not his best performance of the season by any means, and an awful penalty at a crucial moment. Villa have a big problem with penalties but Buendía has the technical ability to handle them. Nevertheless, he didn’t want it, and I didn’t want him on it either.

Ollie Watkins – 3.4

There are no excuses to be made on Watkins’ behalf after that performance. Not good enough. Not even close.

Substitutes

Donyell Malen – 3.6

The quietest of Villa’s cavalry charge of substitutes was unable to adjust his feet to divert a Maatsen cross into the corner. It was a presentable chance wasted.

Morgan Rogers – 6.1 – MOTM

Villa’s man of the match and fair enough. Rogers came on to chase the game, had some joy in the Go Ahead Eagles half and went close to scoring. Looked a cut above the opposition, as all of his colleagues should have.

Matty Cash – 5.3

One of a handful of Villa’s first choice players who came on and slightly improved things in a game that was getting away from them.

Boubacar Kamara – 5.1

Too good for Go Ahead Eagles. Not good enough to get Villa back on level terms in what became a game they were destined to lose.

John McGinn – 5.3

I thought McGinn would be rested. I would have rested him too. In hindsight, I don’t think Villa lose that game with their skipper on the pitch. So it goes.
