Man Utd can now sign 25yo midfielder for £35m in January - report

Manchester United have an opportunity to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher when the transfer window reopens in January, according to AS (page 12).

The Red Devils were keen on landing the England international on loan last summer, but Atletico snubbed the proposal before the transfer deadline on September 1.

The club have continued to be linked with the former Chelsea man, and AS claim that his future at Atletico is increasingly doubtful ahead of the winter transfer window.

The La Liga outfit expressed confidence when signing him from the Blues in 2024, but the Englishman is no longer a regular starter and has made just four starts this season.

Gallagher reportedly has a market value of around £35 million ahead of the next transfer window. It is claimed that United are lurking for his signature and could capitalise on his situation.

Gallagher was one of the standout performers during his time at Chelsea, but he moved to Atletico in the summer of 2024 after a disagreement over terms for a new contract.

The 25-year-old had a relatively good introduction to Spanish football last term, but manager Diego Simeone no longer trusts the Englishman for a regular starting berth.

With the World Cup coming up next summer, Gallagher could be tempted to return to the Premier League in January. He may want regular game time to push for an England recall.

United were quite keen on signing him on a temporary basis last summer. In our view, the club could revive their pursuit with a fresh loan move with an optional buy clause.

Gallagher has vast league experience from his time in the Premier League with Chelsea, Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion. He could seamlessly adapt on his homecoming.

The Blues graduate has the traits to suit manager Ruben Amorim’s style of play. He has a tireless work rate, likes to make regular recoveries and does not shy away from tackles.

Gallagher can operate in multiple midfield roles and has the knack for making regular forward runs. United may want to test Gallagher’s credentials before pursuing a permanent move.

It remains to be seen whether Atletico are open to a loan-to-buy agreement. The Madrid giants could propose a loan with an obligation to buy based on certain conditions instead.
