Insider Links Red Sox To Pair Of All-Star Starting Pitchers In Free Agency

The Boston Red Sox could look to bolster their starting rotation in free agency, and the team could look to land another star.

Boston traded for Garrett Crochet last offseason to be the team’s ace, and the Red Sox could do something similar this offseason. MLB insider Jon Heyman expects Boston to pursue Framber Valdez and Ranger Suárez in free agency.

“Framber Valdez could, I could see that,” Heyman said on his YouTube live stream on Bleacher Report on Thursday. “Ranger Suárez, I could see that. Lefties have had success in Fenway (Park) even with the Green Monster.”

Valdez is 31 years old and is a pending free agent after spending eight years with the Houston Astros. The left-hander went 7-6 wth a 4.34 ERA in 17 games this season with the Astros.

Valdez is a two-time MLB All-Star – 2022 and 2023 – and would be the Red Sox’s third starter behind Crochet and Brayan Bello.

Suárez, meanwhile, was an All-Star in 2024 and is coming off a stellar season. The left-hander went 12-8 with a 3.20 ERA in the regular season, and he went 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA in one start in the playoffs.

Suárez, like Valdez, would likely start behind Crochet and Bello but would be another star pitcher to help solidify the Red Sox’s rotation.

Entering the offseason, Craig Breslow said Boston would be pursuing pitching help, and Heyman expects them to pursue the big fish.
