How Drake Maye Responded To MVP Talk After Patriots’ Week 6 Win

“Drake Maye” and “MVP” have started to get mentioned in the same sentence amid a stellar stretch from the New England Patriots quarterback.

Maye continued his breakout second season by registering 261 passing yards and three touchdowns in Sunday’s 25-19 win over the New Orleans Saints. He became just the fourth quarterback in NFL history to notch 200 passing yards and a quarterback rating over 100 in five straight games at age 23 or younger.

As he continues to climb NFL leaderboards, Maye is drawing more recognition in the MVP conversation. However, Maye downplayed that discussion during Monday’s interview on “WEEI Afternoons.”

“Oh shoot. Nah, I’ve got a lot of work to do,” Maye said. “I think that’s a long way away. Getting some more wins is what I’m focused on.”

The betting markets may disagree with Maye. As of Monday, he’s tied with Matthew Stafford for the sixth-shortest odds (+1600) of all MVP candidates on FanDuel Sportsbook.

It’s hard to deny Maye a spot at the MVP table while he ranks inside the top five of many significant categories. He’s second in completion percentage (73.2), fourth in yards per attempt (8.5), and fourth in quarterback rating (112.5) through six games. Maye fares better in each category than Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield, the three overwhelming MVP favorites on FanDuel.

While Maye took the humble route, voters would have to take his candidacy seriously if casting a ballot today. Of course, a lot can change over the regular season’s final three months.

Maye won’t worry about MVP chatter as he prepares the Patriots for a Week 7 game against the Tennessee Titans.
