Thomas Frank reveals why he chose five Tottenham stars for his leadership group
Thomas Frank has now spoken about his chosen leadership group at Tottenham, after some surprise inclusions and a couple of notable omissions were made.
Thomas Frank has confirmed the players who will form part of Tottenham’s leadership structure this season, adding four new names to join Cristian Romero, who already holds a role.
Ben Davies, Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison, and Micky van de Ven have all been included, as Frank looks to put together a spine of personalities capable of setting standards across what he hopes will be a competitive campaign.
Yet the announcement has not gone without its controversies, with one of the most surprising omissions being Pedro Porro. The Spanish full-back captained Tottenham recently in the Carabao Cup against Doncaster Rovers, which makes his absence from this list stand out even more.
Thomas Frank explains Tottenham leadership group
Speaking to Tottenham’s media team ahead of Spurs’ fixture with Leeds United this weekend, Thomas Frank was asked directly about his choices for the leadership group and the reasoning behind the selection.
The Tottenham boss said: “Finally! You guys pushed me so I had to take a decision. I couldn’t postpone anymore.
“It’s down to a few bits. There is quite a few with leadership potential in them and I think the more we have that want to speak and take responsibility for the bigger picture, the better.
“That’s what makes the great teams. I think this group covers the squad, so that all groups are touched and in sync.”
Spurs fans divided on Pedro Porro omission
Not every Tottenham supporter agrees with Frank’s picks, with plenty left puzzled by the decision to leave out Pedro Porro, especially given his recent captaincy role.
Many have also raised eyebrows over the inclusion of James Maddison, who will miss a large chunk of the season due to injury, and Ben Davies, who is not regarded as a nailed-on starter under Frank.
Nevertheless, there is no escaping the fact that wearing a Tottenham shirt comes with its own demands, and regardless of who is in the leadership group, every player has the duty to meet that standard when they step on the pitch.
