Man Utd handed early boost ahead of Liverpool clash after Arne Slot's 'surprised' admission

Man United have been handed an early boost for the crucial clash on Merseyside.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker suffered an injury in the 1-0 Champions League defeat at Galatasaray on Tuesday.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has confirmed that he would be surprised if Alisson recovered in time for the clash.

He told the media (Liverpoolfc.com): “Saturday it’s clear, he’s not going to play for Brazil, and I would be surprised if he would be there in the first game after the international break.

“It’s always difficult to say the amount of days and weeks, but for the upcoming games he will not be part of us or the Brazil team.”

Alisson has faced United 14 times in his career and has lost only twice, with the last loss coming way back in the 2022-23 season.

The 33-year-old has been one of the pillars of Liverpool’s recent success.

He has a save percentage of over 70% in the last three Premier League seasons.

Giorgi Mamardashvili could replace him between the sticks.

The 25-year-old has yet to play in the Premier League since completing his move to Anfield this summer.

He received his first taste of English football when he started in the League Cup win over Southampton last midweek.

United have scored only twice at Anfield since 2020.

Both of these goals came in a 2-2 draw in January this year, with Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo finding the back of the net.

On the other hand, the Red Devils have conceded 15 goals in the same time frame.

United head coach Ruben Amorim is already walking a tightrope and another humiliating defeat to their arch-rivals could force fans to lose faith in him.
