Queen's Park Collect Largest foodbank donation of 2025

QUEEN’S PARK staff, players and supporters rallied round with rival St Johnstone fans to collect the largest single food donation of the year to the Glasgow SE Foodbank.

A total of £457.20 was raised, in addition to 570.55kg of food to fill the shelves. Volunteers required two fully-stocked vans to move goods gathered at The city Stadium and Lochinch training ground along to the foodbank, which is based on Dixon Avenue in Govanhill.

It marks a successful collaboration between Queen’s Park FC, the team’s Supporters’ Association (QPSA) and Glasgow SE Foodbank which opened in 2011 and is backed by the Trussell Trust. Visiting St Johnstone supporters attending Saturday’s game also contributed to a total which has exceeded expectations.

Denise Ritchie, from the Glasgow SE Foodbank, said: “We are beyond thankful to the team at QPFC and all Spiders fans for the phenomenal donations of food and cash received during last week’s appeal. We asked you to donate to support families in our local area who are struggling to afford the essentials.

“You knocked it out of the park by donating 570kg of food and £457 which will feed 25 families for a week.”

Spiders first-team stars and coaching staff, as well as players within the Queen’s Park Community Foundation, brought food to training last week and staff in the JB McAlpine Pavilion also contributed and organised donations from the public.

By weight, the food collected is the largest single collection of food this year, outside of a supermarket food drive.

Kieran Koszary, head of commercial at Queen’s Park FC said: “The response from our donation drive was truly phenomenal and we would like to pay particular thanks to visiting supporters from St Johnstone who also supported our efforts.

“We always have our southside community at the heart of the club and it was truly humbling to be able to support those in need amongst our neighbours through the foodbank and the fantastic work they do just along the road.

“Our fans have been brilliant at backing the club and it was no surprise they turned out in force to help our local community in this way and the response has been terrific and fills everyone associated with the club with pride.”

Alan Hudson from the QPSA added: “We’re delighted to have been able to help with such a successful collection. We weren’t sure what the response would be, but it’s fair to say it has far exceeded our expectations.

“Thanks to the club who really got behind this and were a huge help in promoting and facilitating the collection and storage of donations all week. A special mention too to the St Johnstone fans who also gave generously on the day.

“It’s been really encouraging to see so many people involved with the different areas of Queen’s Park working together to donate so much, and we’d like to thank everyone who contributed, including the coaching staff and players, the office staff, the QP Foundation and their Community team’s players and parents, and of course all the Queen’s Park supporters who donated, and helped out on the day.”

Donations are always accepted at the foodbank – more information can be found on the website.
