How Alex Cora Felt About ESPN Broadcasting Criticizing Red Sox decision

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora doesn’t agree with the ESPN broadcast and its comments on Nate Eaton’s controversial play.

During the seventh inning of Wednesday’s Game 2 in New York, pinch-hitter Masataka Yoshida singled on a ground ball to second base. Jazz Chisholm Jr. made a stellar play to keep the ball in the infield, but the throw to Ben Rice was bobbled.

Boston held Eaton at third base, and the broadcast was adamant that the outfielder could have scored. Cora disagreed with the broadcaster’s comments.

“That’s their opinion, you know?” Cora said postgame on Wednesday. “I think it’s easy from up there to say that he could’ve scored. You know, they’re not down there with us.”

Holding Eaton at third base proved to be the difference as the Red Sox lost 4-3 in Game 2 of their Wild Card Series against the Yankees. Had Eaton scored, Boston would’ve taken a 4-3 lead in the seventh.

Eaton, meanwhile, said he couldn’t see the ball when he was set to round third base, and the coach held him.

“Obviously, it was a big play,” Eaton said. “We didn’t score. I obviously couldn’t see it. As I’m getting to third, I’m told to stop, and then I couldn’t see how far the ball was away when it got by Rice.”

Trevor Story then flew out to center field with the bases loaded to end the seventh inning after Eaton stopped at third base.

Boston will take on New York in the decisive Game 3 of the Wild Card Series on Thursday.
