Vincent Garcia, Editor-in-chief of France Football, looks back on the creation of the Sócrates Prize and discusses the collaboration with Peace and Sport.

How does the collaboration with Peace and Sport work when choosing the laureate?

When we created the Sócrates Award, we wanted it to be meaningful, not just a communication stunt by a player or a poorly designed initiative. Even with good intentions, one can sometimes engage badly in humanitarian or social causes, with shaky projects. Peace and Sport’s contribution is crucial: they evaluate the seriousness and quality of the projects, and select the best ones according to criteria we define in advance.

The Sócrates Award also shows that in your media, you don’t only cover the strictly sporting side, right?

Yes, highlighting another dimension of football through the Sócrates Award is important for us at France Football and L’Équipe. We want to show all sides of the sport, not just results and trophies. We’ve always done that, through investigations and reports that often go far beyond raw results.

“The purpose of the Socrates Award is to highlight and give visibility to inspiring initiatives, which demonstrate that football can be a powerful driver of social transformation”
