Injury return delayed: £55m star set for Man United comeback in late Oct/early Nov
Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez is currently recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury he suffered in February.
According to journalist Gaston Edul, Martinez is eyeing a return by late October or early November.
Man United are in no mood to rush his comeback, determined to ensure he fully recovers and keeps alive his 2026 World Cup dream.
Initial hopes suggested he might return by late September but that timeline has now been pushed back.
It is concerning news as United have been missing their star defender, which was clear in their 3-0 loss to Manchester City on Sunday.
Martinez is a tenacious tackler and an aggressive defender.
Had he been in Luke Shaw’s place, Jeremy Doku would have struggled to waltz into the box and create City’s opener.
He is one of the best progressive passers from deeper areas, another crucial trait required to thrive in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.
Shaw was considered a like-for-like replacement for Martinez but the Englishman was at fault for all three City goals.
Fabrizio Romano revealed last week that United are considering offering a new deal to the 27-year-old.
His current deal runs until 2027, but the club hold the option to extend it by another year, keeping him at Old Trafford until June 2028.
While his importance cannot be overstated, handing him an extension before proving his fitness could be a dangerous gamble.
The Argetina international moved to Old Trafford from Ajax in a deal worth £55 million, including add-ons, in 2022.
