Alex Cora Provides Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu Injury Updates
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora gave a host of injury updates ahead of Saturday’s game against the New York Yankees.
Starting pitcher Dustin May has yet to resume throwing as he recovers from an elbow issue and reliever Liam Hendriks has been shut down and is unlikely to pitch again this season.
Outfielder Wilyer Abreu, meanwhile, appears to finally be on track to return from his calf strain in the coming days, while rookie outfielder Roman Anthony is taking small steps as he battles an oblique strain.
“Cora says Abreu is expected to be activated next week, unclear if it’s for the A’s or Rays,” Alex Speier of The Boston Globe posted on Bluesky. “- Roman Anthony may be cleared to start walking on a treadmill.”
Cora had said on Friday that Abreu was “still working out” and “running up to 85%,” adding that there were a few more things before he got to 90%, but when that was the case, he’d likely return to action.
The 2024 Gold Glove winner was placed on the injured list on Aug. 21.
Abreu has followed up his solid rookie campaign with an even better 2025, posting 22 home runs, 69 RBI and a .253/.325/.486 slash line across 352 at-bats covering 108 games.
Anthony was called up for his MLB debut on June 9 and after a slow start, caught fire. The former second-round pick recorded eight home runs, 32 RBIs and a strong .292/.396/.463 slash line across the first 257 at-bats of his career before going down with his oblique injury in early September.
Anthony inked an eight-year, $130 million contract extension in August and the team is hoping to have him back for the playoffs, if they qualify.
The Red Sox enter Saturday at 81-67 and 4 1/2 games behind the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays (85-62) but also in possession of the second wild-card spot.
