Railston: Man United agreed transfer fee for academy star before deal collapsed on deadline day

Manchester United were reportedly ready to sanction the permanent sale of their young forward Sam Mather.

Turkish outfit Kayserispor were highly interested in signing Mather from Man United but the deal eventually collapsed on Friday.

The Turkey transfer window closed on 12 September.

According to Manchester Evening News journalist Steven Railston , a fee and a buyback clause were agreed between the two clubs but the Red Devils eventually decided they did not have enough time to facilitate the transfer.

The 20-year-old will be particularly disappointed as he verbally agreed personal terms with Kayserispor.

Mather has outgrown the academy and this summer was a perfect chance for him to kickstart his senior career with stability.

He has been a regular for both the Under-18s and Under-21s groups, netting 29 goals and registering 22 assists in over 60 games.

He has also been sent on loan twice to Rochdale and Tranmere Rovers but he made only 12 appearances.

There was also interest from Germany and Sweden but any deal failed to materialise.

His contract at United expires in 2027.

A move to Turkey would have been a fresh start for the youngster, but he will have to stay put at Carrington at least until January.

While he has mainly operated as a left winger, Mather believes his role lies in the number 10 position.

Mather could be involved in first-team training, but he seems a long way from getting a chance to play under head coach Ruben Amorim.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana was able to complete his season-long loan transfer to Turkish club Trabzonspor.

However, defender Tyrell Malacia had to face a similar fate to Mather, as his proposed move to Eyupspor collapsed before deadline day.
