Red Sox President Gives Thoughts On Alex Bregman Rumors

Boston Red Sox president and chief executive officer, Sam Kennedy, appeared on “The Greg Hill Show” on Thursday to discuss various topics, including the ongoing narrative surrounding Alex Bregman’s potential opt-out and subsequent free agency. Boston signed Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal on February 15; however, the deal features opt-out options for 2025 and 2026.

Will Bregman opt out, as has been rumored, and what does Kennedy think of this? The chief exec addressed this matter, but first discussed some of Boston’s other veterans and the importance of keeping guys in Boston who want to be there.

“A couple of weeks ago, we had a player round table with, let’s say, seven or ten guys, young guys, veteran guys, and a few of us in management and ownership,” Kennedy revealed.

“And the general message from the clubhouse was (that) the guys really love playing in Boston. And I think what’s cool is you’ve got the veteran guys, guys like Alex Bregman and Trevor Story and Aroldis Chapman, mixed in with Garrett Crochet, and Roman (Anthony) and guys that are new, but immediately get it.”

“And the veteran guys appreciate it,” Kennedy continued. “They’ve been other places, and … you could literally see them in the sessions, you know, sharing with guys what it’s like in other places and how much better it is here, how much better it is to play in front of packed houses and in a market where people care about baseball as much as anything in their lives. So it’s a group that wants to be here. And that’s a great thing.”

“And our responsibility is to keep the right guys here for the long term,” Kennedy added. “And that starts with players that want to be here. We want guys that want to play in Boston.”

When asked about the reports that Bregman might opt out of his deal with the Red Sox, Kennedy had this to say:

“You know, it’s interesting. We were all surprised by that report, given (that) … we just haven’t had discussions with Alex about anything other than the goal at hand right now, with what’s in front of us these next 15 games. So that’ll all take care of itself. He wants to be here, (and) we want him to be here. And I’ll leave it at that … he’s such an important part of this season and what we’re doing.”
