Lawyers involved to unstick messy international situation for Roma keeper Svilar
Whilst Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar continues to establish himself as one of the best shot-stoppers in Serie A, and by extension the world, he continues to wait for the opportunity to prove himself one more on the international stage.
The situation is complicated however and now the Gazzetta dello Sport are reporting that lawyers are now involved with the case as the 26-year-old seeks to switch allegiances from Serbia to Belgium.
Belgium want to be able to call up Svilar, who was born and raised in the country to Serbian parents. Svilar was born in Antwerp and would go on to rise through the youth systems at KFCO Wilrijk, Beerschot A.C. and Anderlecht.
Lawyers involved as Svilar seeks switch from Serbia to Belgium
Svilar played for Belgium at every level of youth football before making his debut for Serbia in 2021 in a friendly win over Qatar.
However, the goalkeeper appeared to get cold feet and when he was contacted for a call-up in 2024, after a three-year absence, he refused. This led Serbia head coach Dragan Stojkovic to confirm Svilar would not receive any future call-ups.
Now, Belgium want the player available to them. Iconic Real Madrid star Thibaut Courtois will turn 34 this season and the nation seeks the long-term future of the position.
Svilar is first choice and now layers will be involved to calculate the feasibility of a switch.
