After Manchester City exit, Jack Grealish praises United legend following Everton move
After four seasons, Jack Grealish departed Manchester City this summer to join Everton on a season-long loan, staying in the Premier League. Upon arriving at his new club, the English winger specifically highlighted the influence of a Manchester United legend.
Having made a name for himself at Aston Villa, Grealish joined the Citizens in 2021 for £100 million (around $135 million), making it one of the most expensive transfers in English soccer history. However, his performances never quite lived up to those lofty expectations.
Over four years, Jack played 157 matches for Manchester City and scored 17 goals across all competitions. While he played a key role early on, he gradually lost his spot in the starting lineup—to the point where head coach Pep Guardiola left him out of the 27-man squad for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
In that context, Grealish accepted a one-year loan move to Everton, a deal that will cost the Liverpool-based side over $16 million in wages and fees. There, he’ll look to rediscover his best form during a crucial season that ends with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Jack hopes to earn a place with the England national team.
Grealish pays tribute to a Manchester United legend
Upon joining Everton, Jack Grealish announced he would wear the No. 18 shirt and explained the reason behind that choice. “My two favourite English players ever are Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne and I know they both wore No. 18 here,” he said in an interview with EvertonTV, specifically highlighting the former Manchester United forward.
“So, as soon as I knew this deal was close, I had a look and No 18 was free, so that was perfect for me and it was the only number I was going to take from that point,” Jack added. “I spoke to Wayne before I came here and I mentioned that to him – about the No. 18 – so I hope he’s happy as well.”
Everton could be a turning point for Grealish
When Jack Grealish joined Manchester City just four years ago, he was widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s best players. But in a squad full of stars, he struggled to cement his place and live up to the expectations he carried from Aston Villa.
Now at Everton, the 29-year-old winger has a fresh opportunity to get back to his best. “It’s massive for me, honestly. This is a great club, with great fans. As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go,” Grealish said, expressing excitement about this new chapter in his career.
“On social media, I’ve been flooded with messages from Everton supporters, so there’s that side of it as well and that’s another reason why I chose Everton,” he added. “I want to say thank you to the fans for all of the messages I’ve had already. Thank you for all of the love and support. I hope I can repay you now and I’m sure I will.”
