Donnarumma bids emotional farewell to PSG after Luis Enrique explains reasons behind Super Cup snub

After Luis Enrique explained his decision to drop him, Gianluigi Donnarumma issued a statement bidding farewell to Paris Saint-Germain.

Gianluigi Donnarumma has become the center of one of the biggest controversies of the 2025 summer transfer window after Luis Enrique revealed why he left the goalkeeper out of Paris Saint-Germain’s squad for the UEFA Super Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur. Following the Spanish coach’s comments, the Italian star issued a farewell statement to the club.

When PSG announced their squad for the Super Cup, Donnarumma’s absence was one of the most notable omissions. With his current deal running until June 2026, the player and club failed to reach an agreement on an extension, leading PSG to make the decision to drop him from the team.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Luis Enrique didn’t shy away from the topic: “Donnarumma is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, without a doubt, and an even better person. However, this is the life of top-level footballers. I am 100% responsible for this difficult decision. If it were easy, anyone could do it, but these decisions have to do with the profile of the goalkeeper my team needs,” he told Sky Sports and Sky Italia.

Donnarumma’s statement and response to Luis Enrique

According to Fabrizio Romano, Donnarumma, who played a key role in PSG’s treble-winning 2024-25 campaign, did not take the decision well. As Luis Enrique defended his call to the media, the goalkeeper issued a public statement addressing his situation.

In a message to the fans, Donnarumma made his feelings clear after being dropped: “From the first day I arrived, I gave everything on and off the pitch to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris Saint-Germain. Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team’s success. I am disappointed and disheartened.”

He also addressed supporters directly, expressing hope for a proper farewell. “I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done. If that doesn’t happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me, and I will never forget it. I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights, and of you, who made me feel at home,” Donnarumma wrote.

Donnarumma concluded with a heartfelt message to his teammates: “To my teammates, my second family, thank you for every battle, every laugh, every moment we shared. You will always be my brothers. Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honor. Thank you, Paris.”

After the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham on Wednesday, PSG will open their Ligue 1 campaign on Sunday away at Nantes. With new signing Lucas Chevalier set to take over as the starting goalkeeper, it remains to be seen whether Donnarumma will get a proper send-off—or leave through the back door despite having lifted the Champions League trophy.
