Aston Villa transfer interest in Dutch international cools over injury concerns
Aston Villa have been credited with an interest in Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries this summer but they could put an end to any pursuit over injury concerns, according to reports.
Villa have been exploring possibilities for signing a new right-back, a position they’re believing to be keen on upgrading. Dutch international Dumfries has been in good form at both club and international levels.
The former PSV man defends well and makes consistent attacking contributions, including scoring a few goals. Villa manager Unai Emery would be attracted by Dumfries’ ability to affect games as the Villans look to compete for a top four place in the Premier League.
According to Caught Offside, Villa might have been put off by a series of injuries sustained by the 29-year-old, most notably an apparently recurring hamstring problem and issues with muscle fatigue.
He was sidelined for ten Inter games in all competitions last season, including the Champions League quarter-final and the Nerazzurri’s first two matches at the Club World Cup.
Villa have various right-back options already at their disposal but are also believed to retain an interest in picking up a younger and more cost effective addition in the position, with Héctor Fort still on their radar.
Dumfries’ injury history
The Dutchman suffered muscle fatigue in November 2023, followed by an unspecified muscle injury that kept him out for 27 days.
During his injury and recovery at that time, he missed the final two games in the Champions League group stage against Benfica and Real Sociedad. He was also ruled out for three Serie A matches in December 2023. Simone Inzaghi’s men had to play without him at home to Udinese and Lecce, and in one away match versus Lazio.
Dumfries never lost his touch. Last season, after being sidelined for 40 days, the wing-back – who featured twice for Aruba receiving a call-up the Netherlands – managed to contribute three goals and three assists, including a brace and one assist in the first leg against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final.
The Rotterdam-born star has made 179 appearances for Inter overall. He has netted 22 times and set up 26 goals and was instrumental when Inter Milan won Serie A in 2023/24
Dumfries’ hamstring injury also once cost his nation’s campaign in the UEFA Nations League. He was unable to help Ronald Koeman’s side in the quarter-finals in March 2025, missing both legs against Spain.
