Roman Anthony Talks Contract Extension With Red Sox Legend

Now that the ink has dried on the eight-year $130 million contract extension that Roman Anthony finalized with the Boston Red Sox last week, much of the focus has returned to the Red Sox’s push to make it back to the playoffs for the first time since the 2021 season.

That said, Anthony has become a very popular guy to speak with since signing his extension. Appearing as a guest on MLB Network’s Intentional Talk program on Monday, Anthony spoke with former Red Sox World Series champions Kevin Millar and Ryan Dempster about his motivations to play in Boston long term.

“Well, first and foremost, just coming up with Boston,” said Anthony. “Being drafted by Boston as an 18-year-old kid, and coming up with a lot of the familiar faces that are still around now, and guys that I’ve played with, who I’m still currently playing with. That’s a big part of it. You never really want to leave the organization that drafts you, and the organization that you know you’re comfortable with.”

As a former Red Sox player well-versed in what it’s like to play in Boston when the team is winning, Millar asked Anthony how much the City of Boston and Fenway Park’s atmosphere played into his decision to sign his eight-year contract extension.

“It’s Boston, right? And the city is amazing,” said Anthony. “The fans are unbelievable. And even in the short time that I’ve been there, it’s been unbelievable. And we’re winning lately and playing winning baseball. It’s a different feeling showing up at the park every night. And, there’s nowhere, honestly, I’d rather be than Boston.”
