€100m Man Utd target signs new contract after "verbal agreement" with Red Devils
Manchester United target Javi Guerra has signed a new long-term deal with Valencia.
The Red Devils have had a productive summer transfer window, and they have made three high-profile signings.
Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko should provide an upgrade in the attacking department.
The focus is now on pursuing a new midfielder, and Valencia’s Guerra has been regularly linked over the last few weeks.
It was recently reported that Guerra had a ‘verbal agreement‘ with United, but talks were yet to be held with Valencia.
Guerra has now put an end to the speculation by committing his future to Valencia for the next four seasons.
Guerra’s agent used United as a negotiation tool for new contract
The 22-year-old has developed into a key player for Los Che over the past couple of seasons.
The Spaniard, who had a €100 million (£87m) release clause in his previous contract, is primarily a central midfielder, but can also operate from the holding midfield position.
Guerra possesses a good work rate, likes to high press opponents as well as make recoveries.
He has also chipped in with goal contributions, and United may have made a tentative enquiry.
It appears Guerra’s agent has used the same as a negotiation tool for a new contract.
With less than two years left on his deal, Valencia were forced to act and extend his stay.
The player’s representative got what he wanted. Guerra is undoubtedly talented, but United need a different profile of a midfielder in the squad before the transfer window closes.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba seems a perfect fit. He is a specialist defensive midfielder with good ball control. He is also strong in duels and does not shy away from tackles.
It remains to be seen whether United will make a formal approach for the Cameroonian star. They may have to recoup funds from player sales to afford the £104 million asking price.
