From flopping hard in Lionel Messi’s MLS to reigning back in Europe: Christian Pulisic’s ex-Milan teammate Olivier Giroud scores jaw-dropping pre-season goal

When Olivier Giroud departed Christian Pulisic’s Milan to join Lionel Messi’s MLS rival LAFC, expectations were sky-high. in a twist of fate, the move didn’t pan out as planned.

Olivier Giroud’s soccer journey over the past year has been anything but ordinary. From the bright lights of Serie A glory to a challenging spell in Major League Soccer, and now back to his homeland, the French striker’s career has taken another dramatic turn. When the 38-year-old departed Christian Pulisic’s Milan to join Lionel Messi’s MLS rival LAFC, expectations were sky-high.

Yet, in a twist of fate, the move didn’t pan out as planned. Now, in his latest chapter with Lille, Giroud has just delivered a moment of pure brilliance that has soccer fans across the globe talking. But before revealing that piece of magic, let’s revisit how he got here.

According to statements made during his Lille presentation, the Frenchman admitted that the American adventure wasn’t the right fit for him: “The style of play in the MLS didn’t necessarily suit me,” he confessed. “Coming back to France 13 years later is an opportunity and an incredible challenge for me.”

LAFC had hoped Giroud would be the same decisive force that helped the Rossoneri secure the Serie A title in 2021-22. And indeed, there were flashes — a goal in the 2024 Leagues Cup final against Columbus Crew and another in the U.S. Open Cup final against Sporting Kansas City showcased his knack for delivering in big matches.

But over 37 appearances, he managed just five goals and four assists. Coach Steve Cherundolo’s counter-attacking style didn’t play to his strengths. Giroud often found himself struggling to keep pace with dynamic teammates like Denis Bouanga in rapid transition phases. The veteran striker eventually parted ways with the club by mutual consent.

Back in France, back in form

Giroud’s move to Ligue 1 side Lille was more than just a homecoming — it was a chance to prove he still had what it takes to compete at the highest level. The Frenchman was quick to reassure fans about his readiness: “I feel in good shape physically, don’t worry. I’m ready to take up the challenge. I feel good for my age, and I want to play until my body says stop.”

After a low-key debut against Borussia Dortmund and a brace against Venezia, Giroud saved his best for Lille’s final pre-season test against Premier League side West Ham United at the London Stadium.

The goal that stole the show

In the dying moments of the first half, Benjamin Andre lofted a precise through ball toward the veteran forward. With his back to goal, Giroud executed a sublime chest control while pivoting, before unleashing an acrobatic volley straight into Alphonse Areola’s top corner.

Observers were quick to brand the strike as a flawless blend of technique, instinct, and timing. Lille fans erupted in celebration, and even West Ham supporters showed their appreciation. Social media buzzed with praise — “What a goal from Olivier Giroud!” some wrote on X (formerly Twitter), while others crowned him “The King of Bangers.”
