Red Sox Make Roman Anthony Extension Official With Social Post
The Boston Red Sox signed rookie outfielder Roman Anthony to an eight-year contract extension on Wednesday, with the new deal running until 2033 and including with a club option for 2034.
It’s official, as of the afternoon.
Boston made the announcement on X, which included the latest of what promises to be many obvious puns.
Anthony, 21, is slashing .283/.400/.428 with two home runs since he debuted in against the Tampa Bay Rays on June 9 at Fenway Park. Boston has moved him around the lineup since his debut, with the former top prospect serving as the club’s most effective hitter no matter where he’s slotted — first, second or third.
The Red Sox didn’t disclose the terms of the deal, though it has been reported that it carries a base value of $130 million that could be worth up to $230 million with escalators, according to The New York Post’s Jon Heyman.
MassLive’s Chris Cotillo provided even more details, with the base salary being raised each year should he win Rookie of the Year or MVP at any point over the course of the deal — both of which look like decent possibilities.
