Trevor Story On Verge Of Unique Franchise Record
Trevor Story hasn’t had a healthy season since signing with the Boston Red Sox in 2022. He’s played 110 games this season, which is already a season-high in his time with the Red Sox.
Finally healthy, Story is showing the type of player he can be. Over his 110 games, the shortstop is hitting .257 with 18 home runs. He was also just named American League Player of the Week after a scorching beginning of August.
He’s also used his speed on the bases and is on the verge of tying a franchise record. Story stole his 19th base of the season on Monday against the Kansas City Royals. He’s yet to be caught this season.
In 2007, Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo stole 20 consecutive bases without being thrown out, setting the franchise record for the most stolen bases without being caught. He was thrown out for the first time on June 30 and finished the season with 33 stolen bases.
Story isn’t quite on pace for 33 bags, but his 19 bases are the most he’s had in a season with the Red Sox, and the most he’s had in a season since 2021. His career high for stolen bases is 27, back in 2018 with the Colorado Rockies.
The Royals have Salvador Perez behind the plate most days. Even at 35 years old, Perez is an excellent thrower. Ryan Bergert and Michael Wacha are the scheduled starters for Kansas City to end the series. Both are right-handed, making it slightly easier to steal bases, though Baseball Savant ranks both of them slightly above-average at controlling the running game.
The Red Sox head to the West Coast on Friday for a three-game series with the San Diego Padres. The Padres have had a hard time controlling the running game this season, but acquired Freddy Fermin at the deadline to address that area.
Regardless of the opponent, Story has picked his spots well and avoided running into outs this season. He doesn’t always run, but when he does, there’s a good chance he’ll be safe.
