Wales call for full Bajan support in CONCACAF Cup

0 2

Weymouth Wales are calling on the Barbadian public to support them during their home matches in the CONCACAF Caribbean Cup tournament, which kick off later this month. Wales, the best team in Barbados, qualified for the prestigious hemisphere event after they finished runners-up in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Shield tournament in Trinidad. On Sunday they went down 3-2 to Moca FC of Dominican Republic in a thrilling final at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Trinidad, but their place in the finals guaranteed a step up the Caribbean Cup.

Wales are now back on home soil and will start preparation for the 10-team tournament. They are drawn in Group B alongside Cobao FC, Cavalier FC, Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force FC and Juventus de Cayes. The first game will be on Tuesday August 26 at 8 p.m. The opponents will be Cibao FC of Dominican Republic and the venue is likely to be the Barbados Football Association’s headquarters in the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex at Wildey.

Head Coach Asquith Howell said: “One of the things we wanted to do was not just to play for ourselves, but to let everybody know that Barbados football is going in the right direction. I hope that the fans come out and support us in the second round (CONCACAF Cup). Our first game will be home and it would be great to see the Bajans throwing their full support behind us.”

Wales had the biggest win of the 24-team tournament in Trinidad when they hammered Wolues of British Virgin Islands 8-0 in superb display in their second preliminary game. In the first match they beat Police FC of Trinidad and Tobago 3-1. They then won 2-1 in the semis against Club Franciscain of Martinique before the 3-2 defeat in the final to Moca FC.
