Red Sox Rumors: Sandy Alcantara Trade Deadline Details Shared

The Boston Red Sox came up short in their rumored pursuit of Miami Marlins ace and former NL Cy Young award winner Sandy Alcantara, as well as his teammate, starting pitcher Edward Cabrera.

It wasn’t for a lack of trying, however, according to insider Jon Heyman.

The New York Post columnist shared details on Friday regarding multiple teams’ efforts to acquire Alcantara and Cabrera. The Red Sox, according to Heyman, were among two teams that made the strongest push.

“Yankees declined to give up either Spencer Jones or George Lombard Jr. for Sandy Alcantara. Marlins control Alcantara and Edward Cabrera for multiple years after 2025 so they needed something big. Cubs and Red Sox tried hardest there but no one came especially close,” he posted on X.

Boston was unable to acquire either of the Marlins right-handers, as well as other rumored targets like Joe Ryan or Merrill Kelly.

The Red Sox did, however, land veteran southpaw Steven Matz in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday and picked up right-hander Dustin May in a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.

The team announced on Friday that May will make his Red Sox debut on Sunday against the Houston Astros.
