MLB Insider Floats Two-Player Trade Idea For Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox have a couple of glaring needs to address before the trade deadline strikes at 6 p.m. ET.
Boston finally got itself on the board by acquiring left-hander Steven Matz in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday, but the club still needs to bring aboard a starting pitcher and first baseman to really round out the roster. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has been tied to numerous teams and players who could help him fill those roles, but some believe there’s a possibility that he kills both birds with the same stone.
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal floated the idea of acquiring starting pitcher Charlie Morton and first baseman Ryan O’Hearn in a package deal with the Baltimore Orioles.
(I could have used a better metaphor considering their mascot, huh?)
Morton, 41, had been less-than-stellar to start the season, but his 5.48 ERA across 22 total appearances doesn’t exactly tell the entire story. Baltimore moved the veteran to the bullpen in April, where he figured a few things out before returning to the starting rotation and securing a 3.82 ERA since June 1. The Red Sox are one of several suitors, according to recent reports.
O’Hearn, 32, has seen his numbers slip since being named an All-Star, but they’re still much better than that of Abraham Toro — who he would be replacing in the lineup. O’Hearn is slashing .283/.374/.463 with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs in 2025.
Breslow would likely have to get uncomfortable to make such a deal happen, as trading a package of prospects to your division rival is rarely recommended. It’s just that time of year, though.
