Chargers Sign Pro Bowl O-Lineman To NFL Record Deal

The Los Angeles Chargers locked in their franchise left tackle with a record-setting deal that resets the market.

Rashawn Slater is staying put after signing a four-year, $114 million contract extension that features a record-breaking $92 million guaranteed according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal, finalized Sunday, keeps the two-time Pro Bowler in Los Angeles through the 2029 season and sets a new standard for offensive linemen across the league.

The deal had been in the works for weeks, with Slater entering the final year of his rookie contract. Los Angeles picked up his fifth-year option in May but both sides moved quickly toward a long-term commitment before the regular season. That urgency makes sense given what Slater has already proven.

Drafted 13th overall in 2021, the Northwestern product emerged as one of the game’s elite left tackles almost immediately.

A devastating biceps injury cut his 2022 season short and ankle issues limited his early play in 2023. But Slater bounced back strong, starting every game last year and reclaiming his dominant edge, especially in pass protection.

While injuries may have complicated negotiations, his value never dipped. The Chargers have seen firsthand how critical he is to protecting franchise quarterback Justin Herbert. Pairing Slater with 2024 first-round pick Joe Alt gives the team bookend tackles they can build around.

Slater’s absence from voluntary OTAs and early camp practices hinted at the weight of contract talks but any tension is now behind them. With their blindside protector locked in, the Chargers can focus on chasing wins — and doing it with stability up front.
