Red Sox Outfielder Gives Peek Behind Clubhouse Curtain
Even after Rafael Devers’ departure, the Boston Red Sox lineup remains dynamic.
While the team doesn’t have the most firepower in the league, it’s full of hitters who work counts and punish mistakes. The Red Sox also have plenty of speed, ranking eighth in the league in stolen bases. They’re aggressive too, trying to take extra bases at a high rate.
One of the engines behind that mentality is outfielder Jarren Duran. Duran’s stolen base numbers are down this season, but he leads the American League in triples with 12. Only Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll has more.
On Saturday, Duran tallied two triples and a double as he sprayed the ball all over Fenway Park. He scored just one run, but the Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-2.
Duran hasn’t lived up to his performance last season, though he’s starting to heat up. On June 1, his OPS was .718, over 100 points below his 2024 mark. In July, he’s hit .292 with 12 extra-base hits, raising his OPS to .768. His teammates deserve partial credit for his bounce back.
“The best part about us being so young is if we lose a hard game, we’re laughing and joking, flushing it and we’re ready to move on to the next game,” Duran said. “Having such a young group, they kind of keep you on your toes that it’s like, ‘Dude, who cares? We’re gonna play again tomorrow. We have another game tomorrow.’ That’s always cool to have the young guys in here to keep us on our toes and keep us excited for the next day.”
The Red Sox have one of the youngest lineups in baseball. The active roster includes just four hitters over age 30. While unintentional, it might be helping out. Despite a slow start to the season, the Red Sox own the third Wild Card spot and are just one game behind the Yankees for the top spot.
