Red Sox Place Highly Touted Rookie On Injured List

The Boston Red Sox officially placed rookie infielder Marcelo Mayer on the 10-day injured list on Friday.

“The #RedSox today placed INF Marcelo Mayer on the 10-Day Injured List (retroactive to July 24) with a right wrist sprain,” the Red Sox official X account posted. “To fill his spot, Boston recalled INF David Hamilton from Triple-A Worcester.”

It was reported on Friday morning that infielder David Hamilton was expected to be called up from Triple-A Worcester, likely in place of Mayer.

The 2021 fourth overall pick left Wednesday’s win against the Philadelphia Phillies with right wrist discomfort, and it was reported that he would undergo an MRI on Thursday.

Mayer was called up for his much-anticipated MLB debut in late May when third baseman Alex Bregman was placed on the IL. Mayer filled in for Bregman at the hot corner but moved to second base when the MLB All-Star returned.

The 22-year-old has played 39 games at third base, appeared in eight contests at the keystone and two at shortstop. Mayer heads to the IL having gone 29-for-127 with four home runs, 10 RBI, eight walks and 41 strikeouts, good for a .228/.272/.402 slash line across 44 games.

Hamilton was sent down two weeks ago when Bregman returned from his quadriceps injury.
