Celtics Rookie Has Brutally Honest Take Of Las Vegas Amid Summer League

The Boston Celtics are set to take the floor for their fourth Summer League contest when they square off against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night. For fans watching, it will be another opportunity to see what the team’s 2025 first-round pick, Hugo Gonzalez, is capable of.

Gonzalez has played in two of the Celtics’ three Summer League contests, and he’s flashed his potential on several occasions. Against the Memphis Grizzlies, Gonzalez racked up 12 points, five assists, and four rebounds while knocking down three threes. In his second game against the Miami Heat, Gonzalez had 10 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

It hasn’t all been great for the 19-year-old Spanish guard, as he’s struggled with his shot, hitting just 29.2% of his field goal attempts. He’s also not been particularly great from the free-throw line, where he has more misses (five) than makes (four).

There’s no doubt that the past few weeks have been a whirlwind for Gonzalez. That includes staying in Las Vegas, Nevada, which is where the Celtics are currently playing their Summer League games. While Gonzalez seems to have enjoyed the city of Boston, the same can’t be said for Las Vegas.

“It’s a little bit crazy,” Gonzalez said, per Bobby Krivitsky of Forbes. “I got lucky that I’ve got a lot of family here … It’s really crazy to see for going to the room of anybody in my family, having to pass through a casino, it makes no sense for me.”

“Boston was more or less similar to Madrid … Here, it’s too much. You can be in New York, Egypt, and Paris at one time.”

It’s natural for Gonzalez to be overstimulated by the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas, especially considering he’s attempting to make a positive first impression on the Celtics. Based on these comments, the return to Boston will be a welcome sight for Gonzalez.

For now, he’s going to be focused on continuing to get in as much work as possible with the C’s before the NBA Summer League wraps up. Their Friday night contest against the Lakers is scheduled to tip off at 9 p.m. ET.
