Red Sox Send Two-Word Message To Terry Francona After Latest Achievement
The Boston Red Sox are rolling, as they are entering the All-Star break on a 10-game win streak after completing their sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday afternoon. As it turns out, they weren’t the only team to enjoy some success before the extended break.
In the National League, the Cincinnati Reds, led by former Red Sox manager Terry Francona, cruised into the All-Star break having won four of their past five games.
Their 4-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, though, was particularly noteworthy. That’s because it was win No. 2,000 for Francona, prompting Boston to send him a quick two-word message on social media in the wake of his latest accomplishment.
“Congrats, Tito!!!!” the Red Sox said in reply to the Reds’ congratulatory post for Francona in a post on X.
Francona initially broke in as a manager with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1997, where he spent four seasons before getting fired. Eventually, he found his way to Boston in 2004, where he led them to their historic curse-breaking World Series victory.
The Red Sox would win it all again in 2007 with Francona in charge, and while they remained competitive over the ensuing seasons, the infamous “chicken and beer” incident led to the team’s decision to move on from him after the 2011 campaign.
Francona would land with the Cleveland Guardians in 2013, where he stayed until the 2023 season. After a year off, Francona surprisingly returned to manage the Reds, and after they picked up their 49th victory of the season, “Tito” became the 13th manager in MLB history to reach the 2,000-win milestone.
The Red Sox will be upset that their best streak of the season has been disrupted by the All-Star break, but they have put themselves in a prime position to be buyers come the trade deadline. Boston will be back in action on Friday when they kick off a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs.
