Supercomputer predicts 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final: Chelsea or PSG to lift the trophy?
The stage is set for one of the most anticipated showdowns in club soccer this year as Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain meet in the final of the revamped FIFA Club World Cup. After a month of competition featuring 32 of the top teams from around the world, only these two European giants remain standing. With history, silverware, and global supremacy on the line, all eyes are now on MetLife Stadium in New Jersey for a match that promises fireworks.
While both clubs boast world-class talent and tactical sophistication, a new and unexpected voice has added intrigue to the final: the Opta supercomputer. Known for its data-driven predictions, it has offered a bold forecast that’s sure to rattle at least one dressing room.
PSG arrives as undisputed juggernaut
It’s no surprise that PSG enters the final as the tournament’s most dominant force. Under Luis Enrique, the French champions have extended their treble-winning form into the Club World Cup with a string of emphatic performances. Their path to the final includes 4-0 thrashings of both Real Madrid and Inter Miami, and 2-0 wins over Bayern Munich and Seattle Sounders. Aside from one early stumble—a 1-0 group-stage loss to Botafogo—they’ve looked virtually untouchable.
Indeed, the Parisians have outscored their opponents 18-0 across their last five knockout matches, a streak that has pushed them to the summit of the Opta Power Rankings, where they recently overtook Liverpool as the world’s best club.
Chelsea’s unexpected rise
On the other side, Chelsea have defied expectations under new manager Enzo Maresca, making a deep run that few predicted at the tournament’s outset. While their domestic campaign ended with a fourth-place Premier League finish—15 points behind Liverpool—they’ve surged into the global spotlight with a strong Club World Cup campaign.
Their route to the final has been less brutal but still impressive, with wins over Benfica, Palmeiras, and Fluminense. Their only blemish came in a group-stage loss to Flamengo, but they’ve since bounced back with composure and flair. Notably, new signing Joao Pedro scored twice in the semi-final win over Fluminense, continuing his red-hot start since arriving mid-tournament.
Still, the road to victory now runs through the most formidable team in club soccer—and that’s where the supercomputer’s forecast comes into play.
The supercomputer’s bold prediction
According to the Opta supercomputer, PSG is the clear favorite to win the final, giving the French side a 64.4% chance of lifting the trophy. Chelsea’s probability? Just 35.6%.
The model simulates each match 10,000 times, factoring in everything from recent performances and Power Rankings to betting market odds. As it stands:
- PSG wins the final in 64.4% of simulations
- Chelsea prevails in 35.6% of simulations
- The match goes to extra time or penalties in 26.4% of scenarios
“Given the disparity in rankings between PSG and Chelsea, it comes as no surprise that Opta’s model sides with Les Parisiens,” reported Opta on Friday, June 11.
